Eddy Strikes Out 14 In Loss To No. 23 Virginia

Bears Fall In Pitchers’ Duel 2-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.Sophomore starter Gavin Eddy struck out a career-high 14 batters in the California baseball team's 2-1 road loss to No. 23 Virginia on Saturday at Disharoon Park.

Just as they did in yesterday's win, the Golden Bears (26-24, 9-17 ACC) got out to a great start on both sides of the ball with Eddy striking out the side in the first and left fielder Carl Schmidt giving his team the early 1-0 lead with his ninth home run of the season in the top of the second.

Eddy struck out six Cavaliers through four innings and took a no-hitter into the fifth before surrendering a single with one out in the frame. The right-hander stranded that runner at first getting a fly out and his eighth K of the ball game to end the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Hoos (33-17, 13-13 ACC) got two runners into scoring position with just one out. Eddy mowed down the next batter for his 13th punchout and fanned the next batter as well to get to 14 in what should've been an inning-ending sequence, but the third strike was dropped and a Cavalier scored from third to tie the game at 1-1. It ended a 13-inning scoreless streak for UVA.

Eddy finished the day with a quality start in the no-decision tossing seven three-hit innings with a pair of walks and the most strikeouts by a Bear since his teammate Ethan Foley sat down 13 against San Francisco last season.

Freshman Cade Colombara took the ball in the ninth and had an opportunity to get out unscathed but committed a costly error that allowed Virginia to score an unearned run and take a 2-1 lead.

Cal put the game-tying run on second base in the top of the ninth but could not bring him in. The Bears registered a season-low three hits and take a seven-inning scoreless streak into tomorrow's rubber match at 10 a.m. PT on ACCNX.
