Bears Add Two Transfers To Roster

Julia Sprecher (LSU), Macey Butler (Texas) Join Cal Program

The California beach volleyball team signed two accomplished student-athletes Thursday, bolstering its depth for next season and beyond.

Julia Sprecher, a 2026 Second Team All-American who spent the past two seasons at national power LSU, joins the Golden Bears as a rising junior. Meanwhile, Macey Butler, who went 53-27 at Texas over the past three seasons, will be a grad transfer for Cal in 2027.

Sprecher played all of last season as part of the Tigers' No. 1 pair and compiled a record of 22-15. LSU went 22-16 and finished the year ranked No. 12 in the final AVCA Collegiate Beach Poll. She was named to the All-MPSF Second Team to go along with her All-American accolades.

Butler, the daughter of Cal men's basketball Hall-of-Famer Dave Butler whose brother, Luke, currently plays basketball for the Bears, began her career at UCLA before transferring to Texas. She went 25-11 in 2025 before following up with a 19-10 record last season. Butler was named to the 2026 MPSF All-Tournament Team after helping the Longhorns win the MPSF championship.

Cal went 24-14 last season and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship. The Bears were ranked No. 8 in the final AVCA Collegiate Beach Poll of 2026.

Cal is moving into a new facility – the Banatao Family Beach Volleyball Stadium – beginning next season.
