Bears To Represent Multiple Nations At U23 World Championships

Large Cal Contingent To Compete On International Stage

The California men's rowing program will be well-represented at the U23 World Rowing Championships with 10 Golden Bears set to compete for six different nations July 23-26 in Duisburg, Germany.

Leo Rosenquist (Germany) and Johannes Benien (Germany) will feature in their third consecutive U23 World Rowing Championships in 2026. Xavier Gagnon (United States), Nat Gauden (Great Britain) and Osian James (Great Britain) will be making their second straight appearances at the event while Michael Kain (United States), Rory Menzies (Australia), William McClean (Switzerland), Nemanja Luledzija (Serbia) and Mihajlo Dedic (Serbia) will be making their debuts at the U23 level on the international stage.

Rosenquist is set to feature in Germany's men's 8+ at this year's U23 championships. Last year, he won silver in the men's 2- and the year prior, he helped Germany to a sixth-place finish in the men's 8+ event. His fellow countryman Benien will feature in both the men's 4- and mixed 8+ events this year. Benien won bronze with Germany's men's 8+ in 2025 and took home a silver medal in the men's pair event in 2024.

Gagnon will row in the Team USA men's eight with Kain as the coxswain. Gagnon helped the U.S. place fifth at last year's competition in the same event. Additionally, Kain will cox the mixed 8+ entry, joined by fellow Bear, Ella Wheeler of Cal women's rowing, in the stroke seat.

James will row in Great Britain's men's 8+ this year after taking fourth in the men's 4- at last year's competition. GBR will look to defend its title after winning the men's eight event in 2025. His fellow Brit Gauden will row in the men's quadruple sculls this year after taking fourth in the C final of the men's double sculls in 2025.

Dedic and Luledzija will both be making their first appearances at the U23 World Rowing Championships in the men's pair event for Serbia. Menzies will row in the Australian men's eight crew. The Aussies took fourth in the event at last year's championships. McClean is set to feature in the men's 4- for the Swiss team.

Results for all races throughout the weekend can be found on the World Rowing official website.
