DUISBURG, Germany – California men's rowers brought home hardware from the U23 World Rowing Championships held in Duisburg, Germany, this past weekend. Osian James and Nat Gauden won gold for Great Britain in the men's 8+ and men's 4x events, respectively, while Xavier Gagnon and Michael Kain won silver for the United States in the men's 8+ and Kain added a gold medal in the mixed 8+ event. Rory Menzies (Australia), Leo Rosenquist (Germany), Johannes Benien (Germany), William McClean (Switzerland), Mihajlo Dedic (Serbia) and Nemanja Luledzija (Serbia) also represented the Golden Bears at the international competition.
 
James helped Great Britain win gold in the men's 8+, which was the second-consecutive U23 championships in which the Brits won the title. His fellow countryman, Gauden, also won gold for GBR in the men's quadruple sculls event. It was Gauden's first gold at the U23 competition after placing sixth in the C final of the double sculls event last year.
 
Gagnon and Kain were both a part of the United States crew which claimed the silver medal in the men's 8+, the first medal for each Bear at the age-grade competition. Kain also coxed Team USA's mixed 8+, which won the gold medal. He was joined by Cal women's rower, Ella Wheeler, in the boat. 
 
Menzies helped Australia finish in fourth place in the men's 8+ while Rosenquist stroked the Germany men's 8+, which finished fifth. Benien finished first in the B Final in the men's 4- and also came in sixth in the mixed 8+ for Germany. McClean finished sixth in the B Final of the men's four event for Switzerland while Dedic and Luledzija finished first in the B Final of the men's pair event.
 
Incoming freshman Tom Olbrich also won the silver medal for Germany in the men's double sculls.
 
"It is so impressive to have so many of our current student-athletes competing on the world stage – and winning medals!" Cal head coach Scott Frandsen said. "To have Cal be so well-represented at this event is a great statement about these individual athletes, and the program as a whole."
