BERKELEY, Calif. -
Four members of the University of California's men's water polo team were named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Academic All-Conference selections.
Sophomore Attila Banhidy (3.74 GPA), junior Russell Bernstein (3.14), junior Chris Lathrop (3.27) and senior Mike West (3.21) join the 29 players from the conference who received the honor for academic excellence among student athletes.
Banhidy, an Eger, Hungary native, enjoyed his finest season as a Bear, being named to the MPSF's second team this season. He led the team in scoring with 33 goals. Bernstein, who hails from La Canada, CA, was Cal's chief goalie in 2001, playing in all 22 matches while stopping 132 shots to establish a 5.29 goals-against-average. West, who joined Bernstein on the MPSF's third team all-conference, held down the fort on defense for the Bears in his final season with the squad, scoring 14 times (tied-fourth on team). West is a Bay Area native, having attended Cupertino HS in San Jose. Lathrop finished eighth on the team in scoring, netting 12.
Cal finished its season with a 15-7 record, ranked second in the nation.
