No. 3 Cal Men's S&D Captures Georgia Invite

ATHENS, GA - Bolstered by victories from sophomore Will Hamilton in the 200 fly (NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:42.75) and freshman Jacob Pebley in the 200 back (1:41.62), the No. 3-ranked Cal men's swimming and diving team won the 2012 Georgia Fall Invitational Sunday (Dec. 2) at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga.

The Golden Bears, the defending 2011 and 2012 NCAA team champions, captured the meet with 856 points, ahead of second place Virginia (702) and host Georgia (662.5). The other schools competing at the invitational were Auburn, Penn State, Harvard, Virginia Tech and Texas.

Other strong performances for Cal Sunday included sophomore Fabio Gimondi placing second in the 100 free (43.29), senior Trevor Hoyt finishing second (1:54.82) and freshman Josh Prenot third (1:55.06) in the 200 breast, and the Bears' 400 free relay (senior Ben Hinshaw, Gimondi, junior Shayne Fleming and sophomore Seth Stubblefield) coming in second with a time of 2:54.80.

Additional top finishes for the Bears included freshman Michael Haney placing fifth in the 200 fly (1:47.08), sophomore Adam Hinshaw coming in seventh in the 1650 free (15:10.76) and sophomore Jesse Ryckman placing eighth in the 200 back (1:45.70).

In the platform diving competition, freshman Collin Pollard was seventh with a mark of 278.50, and sophomore Thomas Selby was eighth with a score of 277.25.

On Saturday, Prenot won the 400 IM in a school-record time of 3:41.36, while on Friday junior Marcin Tarczynski won the 200 IM with a time of 1:44.36 and the Bears' 400 medley relay - behind the swims of Tarczynski, Hoyt, Stubblefield and Gimondi - placed first with a time of 3:09.36.

The Georgia Invitational wrapped up the fall portion of Cal's 2012-13 swimming schedule. The Bears next compete Jan. 25, 2013 at Arizona and Jan. 26 at Arizona State.
