No. 4 Cal Men's S&D Cruises Past ASU, 163-126

TEMPE, ARIZ. - Paced by two victories by freshman standout Josh Prenot (100 breast, 500 free) and 1-2-3 finishes in four events, the No. 4-ranked Cal men's swimming and diving team improved to 4-0 with a 163-126 dual meet victory over host Arizona State Saturday (Jan. 26).

Prenot, a newcomer from Orcutt, Calif. who has already set the Golden Bears' school record in the 400 IM (3:41.36) earlier this season, won the 100 breast in a time of 56.64 and captured the 500 free in a time of 4:32.16 against the Sun Devils. Cal also went 1-2-3 in the 100 back with senior Marcin Tarczynski (50.55).

Other 1-2-3 finishes for Shayne Fleming, 20.27; sophomore Trent Williams, 46.02) and the 200 back (freshman Jacob Pebley, 1:46.19; senior Jeremy Bagshaw, 1:51.51).

The Bears were also paced by wins from freshman Trent Williams in the 200 free (1:39.09). Williams' brother, Trevor, is an outstanding junior pitcher on Arizona State's baseball team. Cal also won the opening race, the 200 medley relay, in a time of 1:28.51 (junior Tony Cox, senior Trevor Hoyt, Brown, Fleming). The Bears swam the final two events, the 200 IM and the 200 free relay, as exhibitions.

Cal, the 2011 and 2012 NCAA team champions, will next host Cal State Bakersfield at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7; and Pac-12 foe USC on Friday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m., at Spieker Aquatics Complex. On Friday, the Bears defeated No. 1 ranked Arizona, 159-134, in Tucson.
