Redshirted last season after having "Tommy John" surgery on his left elbow…has been a leader for Cal, both on the mound and at the plate...if healthy, will again be a valuable left-handed pitcher and his success could be a key to the Bears season...is also an outstanding contact hitter and on the mound has great control, throwing a fastball, change-up and excellent curveball...has six complete games to his credit…
AS A SOPHOMORE (1999): Numbers fell off from the year before, finishing 3-8 with a save and a 6.15 ERA on the mound and batted .224 with three doubles, three home runs and seven RBI at the plate…hit .312 (5-for-16, double, home run, two RBI) against Pac-10 competition…still had some outstanding performances, including three complete games-Feb. 22 at Stanford (9.0 innings, no decision, 3-2 win in 14 innings, four hits, one earned run, four walks, seven strikeouts), Mar. 9 versus Santa Clara (8-0 Cal shutout, 9.0 innings, nine hits, no runs, no walks, four strikeouts) and May 1 versus Arizona (lost 6-5, 9.0 innings, 10 hits, three earned runs, two walks, five strikeouts)…also pitched well in a 3-1 loss versus Pepperdine Feb. 5 (8.0 innings, five hits, two earned runs, three walks, five strikeouts), a 2-1 victory over Santa Clara Feb. 17 (5.0 innings, two hits, no runs, no walks, five strikeouts), a 6-2 loss Apr. 12 at USC (8.0 innings, eight hits, four earned runs, three walks, a career-high 10 strikeouts) and a 12-4 victory May 9 at Washington State (7.0 innings, six hits, three earned runs, five walks, seven strikeouts)…picked up save in one-inning shutout ball Feb. 2 versus Santa Clara…at the plate was 2-for-3 with a double Feb. 10 versus Fresno State, 1-for-2 with a home run Feb. 13 versus Long Beach State and 3-for-4 with a double and the game-winning home run in the 6-5, 10th inning victory Mar. 21 versus Washington…
AS A FRESHMAN (1998): Was 6-5 with a save (five no decisions), and a team-leading three complete games, 4.88 ERA (seventh in the Pac-10 Southern Division) and 97.7 innings on the mound…at the plate, batted .242 with five doubles, three home runs and 25 RBI...had an outstanding effort May 8 in the Bears 6-0 shutout victory over Pac-10 Champion Washington, pitching his third complete game of the season (9.0 innings) with six hits, no runs, one walk and seven strikeouts...the Huskies had not been shutout in 115 straight games...threw a complete-game Apr. 24 at Stanford in a 4-3 loss (seven hits, three earned runs, two walks, seven strikeouts)...defeated No. 1 Stanford Apr. 10, with a complete game (eight hits, two earned runs, two walks, three strikeouts)...was 4-for-4 with an RBI Apr. 14 at San Francisco...defeated UCLA Apr. 1 (8.0 innings, eight hits, four runs, four walks, three strikeouts)...was stellar Mar. 22 at Arizona State (8.0 innings, seven hits, one earned run, three walks, six strikeouts, 3-for-4 with a double, RBI)...twice named Pac-10 Southern Division Pitcher of the Week (Mar. 17, May 11), picking up two wins versus Washington State in relief (8.7 innings, five hits, one run, two walks, four strikeouts)...earned all-tournament at Hormel Classic Mar. 6-8 (9-7 win in relief vs. Minnesota Mar. 7, 5.3 innings, five hits, two runs, one walk, four strikeouts)...had game-winning RBI Jan. 30 at CS Fullerton...was honorable mention All-Pac-10 Southern Division...
HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: Had a phenomenal career at De La Salle High School in Concord, leading his team to back-to-back North Coast Section titles...as a senior batted .321 with four home runs and 36 RBI, and was 11-1 with a 1.20 ERA on the mound...recorded 132 strikeouts in 87.0 innings...was named Contra Costa Times Player of the Year, first team All-East Bay, All-City Player of the Year, All-County Player of the Year and California Player of the Year (High School Coaches Poll)...as a junior batted .436 with 12 doubles, a triple, three home runs and 23 RBI...as a pitcher was 8-1 with a 0.49 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 71.0 innings...was named All-Bay Valley Athletic League Player of the Year, first team All-East Bay, All-City Player of the Year, All-County Player of the Year and California Player of the Year (High School Coaches Poll)...during sophomore year was first team All-Bay Valley Athletic League and first team All-City, batting .388 with six doubles, a triple, a home run and 29 RBI...as a pitcher was 6-4 with a 1.69 ERA and had 78 strikeouts in 62.0 innings...in the summer of 1997 played in the North-South All-Star Game and was the MVP of the North squad...also competed in the Sunbelt Classic in Shawnee, OK...in the summer of 1996 competed in the Area Code Games for the San Francisco Giants and was team MVP...in the summer of 1995 was a Junior Olympic gold medalist with the Nor Cal Angels, competing in the national tournament in Des Moines, IA along with fellow Cal teammate Mike Tonis...was also named to the Junior Olympic All-Tournament Team...in the summer of 1994 was a Junior Olympic silver medalist with the Nor Cal Black Sox, competing at the national tournament in Cocoa Beach, FL…in the summer of 1998 played for the Hyannis Mets in the Cape Cod League, going 4-3 with a save and a 3.58 ERA…in the summer of 1999 pitched for the Brewster Whitecaps in the Cape Cod League, going 4-2 with a 2.31 ERA...was recruited by Miami, Arizona State, Tennessee and Pepperdine before selecting Cal…majoring in American studies...parents are Dale and Patty Dennis...born August 12, 1978 in Daytona Beach, FL.
