AS A SOPHOMORE (1999): Had a phenomenal year, as he joined Xavier Nady as a first team All-Pac-10 selection, was an honorable mention All-America selection with the NCBWA and was a first team All-West District pick...led the Bears with a .384 batting average with 17 doubles, a triple and 17 home runs...batted .396 against Pac-10 competition and finished second in the conference in on-base percentage (.496), sixth in batting average (.384) and seventh in walks (40) and home runs (17)...was selected the winner of the Clint Evans Award as Cal's MVP and was the winner of the Robert A. AS A FRESHMAN (1998): Was sidelined in the fall of his freshman year when he ruptured his spleen diving for a ball in the outfield...recovered to play in 48 games with 29 starts at third base, seven starts as a designated hitter and six starts at catcher...batted .271 with seven doubles, a triple, 10 home runs and 33 RBI...went 4-for-9 with a double and triple Feb. 27-Mar. 1 at. Arizona...was spectacular at the Hormel Classic Mar. 6-8 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, MN, as he was named MVP and leading hitter, going 9-for-14 with two doubles, four home runs and nine RBI...was 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and six RBI Mar. 6 versus Connecticut, 2-for-5 with a home run Mar. 7 versus Minnesota and 3-for-4 with two home runs Mar. 8 versus Rutgers...his four home runs set a Hormel Classic record...was also named Pac-10 Southern Division Co-Player of the Week (Mar. 10) for his heroics at the Metrodome...hit six home runs in eight games from Mar. 6-16...went 4-for-12 with a home run and three RBI May 2-3 versus Arizona...had an 11-game hitting streak (24-for-50, .480, 4-2B, 3B, 6-HR, 19 RBI) from Feb. 28-Mar. 18...batted .279 (17-for-61, 2-HR, 21 RBI) with runners in scoring position...
HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: At Elk Grove High School, was named Male Athlete of the Year and was a two-time All-Delta League selection and three-time team MVP...as a junior batted .349 with two home runs and was 5-0 on the mound...in the summer of 1997 competed in the Sunbelt Classic in Shawnee, OK along with fellow Cal teammates Jason Dennis, Ryan Atkinson and Rob Meyer...in the summer of 1995 was a Junior Olympic gold medallist with the Nor Cal Angels, competing in the national tournament in Des Moines, IA along with Dennis...also in 1995, played on a USA team that won a gold medal in a Goodwill Series in Japan and China...in the summer of 1996, played at the Team One Showcase in Cincinnati and the Area Code Games in Long Beach...in the summer of 1998 played for the Brewster Whitecaps in the Cape Cod League, batting .313 with six doubles, a triple and 17 RBI...played in the Cape Cod League All-Star Game with fellow Bear Jon Shirley...this past summer teamed with Xavier Nady on the USA National Team, batting .310 (27-for-87) with six doubles, a triple, eight home runs, 22 RBI and a .678 slugging percentage...was recruited by Stanford, Fresno State and Pepperdine before selecting Cal...majoring in American studies...parents are George and Norma Tonis...born February 9, 1979 in Sacramento, CA.
