1998...had a solid redshirt-freshman season, seeing substantial field duty...played most of the year despite a shoulder injury that was corrected in post-season surgery...sat out the Arizona and Arizona State games entirely and playing time was limited in the Stanford finale as well because of the shoulder problem...ended the season with six catches for 45 yards...best game was clearly at Oregon State when he had three catches for 19 yards, including a 3-yard TD catch in the first quarter...also had a crucial 11-yard catch to convert a 3rd-and-8 situation with under three minutes left in the game that allowed Cal to run out the clock and protect a 20-19 lead...
1997...sprained an ankle during fall training camp and missed the season-opener at Houston...came back the next week vs. Oklahoma to make a 7-yard reception, but suffered a sprained knee and ended up being a medical redshirt as a true-freshman.
High School/Personal: Earned SuperPrep All-America honors at Galt HS, ranking as the No. 9 tight end prospect in the country...also was rated the No. 23 overall prospect in the Far West by the same publication...rated as the No. 2 tight end prospect in the West by PrepStar magazine...registered four votes in the Best in the West poll by the Long Beach Press-Telegram...earned team MVP honors three consecutive seasons as a prep...caught 22 passes for 417 yards and three TDs as a senior...had three sacks and three interceptions as a DE/LB...caught seven passes for 188 yards and two TDs vs. Laguna Creek HS...had an 87-yard interception return for a TD vs. Rio Americana HS...also starred as a defensive end and many schools recruited him to play defense...an excellent student who came to Cal with a 3.8 GPA...has an interest in dentistry as a career...caught 17 passes for 296 yards and four TDs as a junior...had 77 tackles, including an amazing 20 tackles for loss, and caused six fumbles as a junior...chose Cal over UCLA and Oregon, among others...also lettered in baseball as a junior and senior...majoring in environmental economic policy at Cal...parents are Warren and Rhonda Smith...born July 8, 1979 in Lodi, CA.
