Aside from contributing to one of the most successful seasons in California women’s gymnastics history, half of the Golden Bear squad has been acknowledged for outstanding performances outside of the gym as well. Seven members of the Cal women’s gymnastics team were selected for the Pac-12 Women’s Gymnastics All-Academic Teams, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Wednesday.
“This is what Cal Athletics is all about – balancing academic and athletic life and achieving the highest results in both areas. I think our student athletes exemplify that balance,” said California head coach Justin Howell.
Junior Alicia Asturias was named to the Pac-12 All-Academic first team, while senior Dallas Crawford were honorable mention selections.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
Asturias is a two-time first team All-Academic selection with a 3.78 cumulative GPA in Psychology. Earlier this season, she was also named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team for her performance at the Pac-12 Championships in Corvallis, Ore. Asturias competed in the all-around in every meet of the 2013 season, registering new career-high scores in all five events.
Rosenzweig owns a 3.44 GPA as a cognitive science major. This is her second All-Academic Second Team selection. Olivere, Spomer, Chang and Crawford were also recognized with honorable mentions in 2012, while it is Alferos’ first selection.
