Maxwell Family Field Renovations Complete
BERKELEY - The University of California, Berkeley, today announced that the renovations to the Maxwell Family Field are complete and the campus’ multi-use facility located just north of California Memorial Stadium has reopened officially for practice and competition.
Jennifer Maxwell (’88), co-founder of Power Bar, is responsible for funding the renovations and resurfacing the field. Thanks to a generous gift from Maxwell, the newly renovated multi-use facility which sits atop the Stadium Parking Structure, will provide practice and/or competition usage for Cal’s varsity women’s lacrosse team, the University of California Marching Band, intramural sports, Cal football, club sports, and other extracurricular activities. Specific programming for each entity will commence shortly after the field reopens.
Maxwell, an accomplished competitive runner, continues to build an important legacy at the University.
“Jennifer Maxwell’s passion for Cal, its student-athletes and facilities, and its mission is truly remarkable,” said Mike Williams, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “This gift is a way to celebrate the Maxwell family’s commitment to this University and we are forever grateful for their contributions to further student and student-athlete development here.”
In addition to serving as a host location for numerous Cal varsity and intramural sports and activities, Maxwell Family Field will also serve as the location for several special events, including the May 14, 2015, UC Berkeley Foundation Awards ceremony and reception.
Cal Athletics sponsors 30 intercollegiate programs supporting approximately 850 student-athletes. Over its history, Golden Bear teams have captured 88 national team championships, and student-athletes, alumni and coaches have won 183 Olympic medals, including 103 gold. Cal has also finished among the top 10 in the annual Directors’ Cup standings seven times since 2004 with a program-best third in 2011. Additional information is available online at CalBears.com.
