Three-time Olympic medalist Curtis Cuneo, while a Cal student (1944-48), had to travel to Treasure Island for her swimming instructions, as the University had no women’s swimming team … in 1944 she set world freestyle records at 800 meters and 880 yards, and that same year she won the Sullivan Award, bestowed on the top amateur athlete in the United States … in 1947 she established world freestyle records at 100 yards, 400 meters and 440 yards … representing the United States in the 1948 Olympics games in London, Curtis Cuneo won gold medals in the 400-meter freestyle and 4 x 100 freestyle relay and took home a silver medal in the 100 freestyle … was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1966 and, in 1983, was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame.
