One of the greatest rugby coaches in U.S. history … accounted for an amazing 339-84-23 record during his 36 years as Cal's rugby coach from 1938-74 … born in Hastings, New Zealand in 1909, but came to the U.S. and attended Cal with the intent on attending dental school … played rugby at Cal under Ed “Mush” Graff … graduated from Cal in 1935 … received Dux Medal at graduation, awarded for outstanding scholastic and athletic leadership … went on to receive a DDS from UCSF in '37 … coached the Cal freshman team for in '36 and '37 and then became head coach at Cal in 1938 … among the top players he coached at Cal were Noel Bowden, Pat Vincent, John Harrison, Matt Hazeltine and Les Richter.
