While at Cal, he was the world record holder in the 100-yard dash, 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 400-meter relay and 880-yard relay … his 100-meter dash record stood for over two decades … a member of the 1956 U.S. Olympic team, winning a gold medal as a member of the 400-meter relay team … also the PCC Champion in the 100 yard dash and 220 yard dash in 1957 … took fourth place at the 1956 NCAA Championship in the 100-yard dash … improved upon his ’56 NCAA performance by claiming 3rd in the 100-yard dash and 2nd in the 220-yard dash at the 1957 Championship, earning critical points to boost the Cal team to 2nd place overall.
