One of the top safeties in college football … played on Pappy Waldorf's Rose Bowl teams of 1949 and 50 … also returned punts … described by Waldorf as "one of the five best players I ever coached" … named All-American in 1950 by Look magazine and the Helms Athletic Foundation as well as All-West Coast by Associated Press … earned the team's Vard Stockton Award for outstanding defensive player in both the 1950 and '51 Rose Bowl games … also starred on top Cal rugby teams … following graduation, served as an assistant football coach for six seasons and as a volunteer freshman coach for another 20 years … served as the fund-raising chairman of the Evans Baseball Field Improvement Fund in recent years and was selected as the Bear Backer "Bear of the Year" in 1988.
