CAL BEACH VOLLEYBALL

The Clark Kerr Sand Courts, nestled beneath a beautiful canopy of trees on the Southeastern side of campus, is home to the Cal beach volleyball program.

Two regulation courts reside just off Sports Lane near the Golden Bear Recreation Center. Originally built in the late 1990s, the courts were home to mostly local enthusiasts who helped maintain the facility. The Bears began training and playing their home matches there when the program formed in 2014.

The addition of a new facility will positively impact every aspect of our program. We are thankful for the campus giving us this opportunity. Cal beach volleyball has continued to grow every year, and a new facility will give our student-athletes an environment in which they can flourish.
– Meagan Owusu, Cal Beach Volleyball Head Coach

Cal beach volleyball will have a new facility to call home under a plan announced by Chancellor Christ in the summer of 2018. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2021 with the project to be completed in 2022. The beach volleyball facility will remain on the Clark Kerr Campus, moving to a new location near the intersection of Sports Lane and Dwight Way. It will feature four sand courts, team rooms, locker rooms, restrooms and a scoreboard.

The fastest growing NCAA sport, beach volleyball is sponsored by nine Pac-12 schools with 75 universities around the country offering the sport. Cal began its program in 2014, and the Bears have quickly become a top-15 team. With the new facility, Cal will be able to host televised matches, better accommodate fans and provide the resources to allow the Bears to thrive on the national stage.

Aligning with Cal Athletics’ mission to provide nearly 900 student-athletes with a well-rounded experience, complete with first-rate opportunities for their athletic, academic and personal growth, this new facility will be a critical component to the beach volleyball student-athlete experience. It also aligns with the values the University and the athletic department place on gender equity, including access to equitable facilities for male and female student-athletes.
