Nicole Matysik enters her second year as an assistant coach for Cal cross country/track & field in the 2026-27 season.
The 2025-26 track & field season saw Cal's distance runners collect 18 program top-10 times, including school records in the indoor 600m (Jackson Hein) and 1000m (Lamarr Kirk Jr.). In addition to the program records, seven of those were top-five times, thanks to the efforts of Justin Pretre (No. 2 indoor mile/3000m, No. 5 1500m), Lamarr Kirk Jr. (No. 5 indoor 800m), Addie Johnson (No. 3 indoor 3000m) and Sophie Tau (No. 4 outdoor 5000m, No. 5 indoor 5000m).
In the 2025 cross country season, Pretre was named the ACC Men’s Cross Country Performer of the Week after winning two consecutive races and was also Cal’s top finisher at the NCAA West Regionals. Tau was the top runner for the women, placing second at the Kim Duyst Twilight Invitational and finishing top-30 at regionals.
The 2025 track & field season saw Lockhart coach Garrett MacQuiddy to program records in the 1500m and indoor mile, Honorable Mention All-America status and an outdoor ACC silver medal. He also posted program top-10 marks in the indoor 800m and distance medley relay, joined by Iyan Godwin, Pretre and Isaiah Shaw (the first two each setting two additional program top 10s). On the women’s side, Amelia Wardle-Stacey (10,000m), Tau (indoor 5000m) and Johnson (indoor 3000m) each recorded program top 10s of their own.
Matysik ran for Furman cross country and track & field from 2019-25, earning 11 combined All-Southern Conference (SoCon) honors, three conference steeplechase titles (2022, 24-25) and two SoCon indoor titles in the distance medley relay (2021-22). She also earned SoCon medals in the indoor mile (2024 – silver; 2020 – bronze) and outdoor 1500m (2025 – bronze).
Matysik is a native of Key West, Florida, and attended Key West High School from 2015-19, where she was a three-time Florida State runner-up in cross country as well as the All-Monroe County Runner of the Year for both cross country and track in all four years. She also competed at both the indoor and outdoor U18 Polish Championships in 2018, where she finished among the top-eight 3000m runners.
