I Chose Cal because...during the process of choosing a college, I had it in my head that I would not go to school in California and then I ended up going to the University of California. Talk about irony. I wanted to try out the other coast. My parents wanted me to give Cal a chance, so I did to kind of humor them. It was love at first sight. One moment on my visit that stands out is climbing to the top of Memorial Stadium at sunset and looking out across the bay. That's when it clicked. I knew I was supposed to come here.
My favorite thing about Berkeley is...there is always something going on! To quote Clark Kerr, "If you are bored with Berkeley, you are bored with life."
Something on my iPod that might surprise you...is everything. My music always gets vetoed in social situations. I have everything from gospel to country to jazz to classic rock to bluegrass to show tunes. My best example would probably be my own album, "Pocket Full of Raisins." I like to write songs and play guitar. They are available for purchase. $10. Just kidding.
The most interesting thing I did this summer was...while most of my team would probably say our trip to Italy, but I'm going to have to say traveling back East to Beaver Falls, Penn., with my grandma, mom, aunt, and some cousins. My grandma grew up there, so we attended a family reunion and explored her old stompin' grounds. I got to meet family from across the country and kick it with the Amish. It was pretty rad.
When I'm upset, I like to...go on a long run with my iPod. It provides a setting for me to be alone, think things through and produce some much-needed endorphins.
I get mad when I miss this TV show: I don't really have any weekly shows right now. But the most recent was "Lost."
The best moment in sports history was when...the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team won the 1999 World Cup. I got to go since it was held near my house at the Rose Bowl. I had been to a few UCLA football games there, and I thought it was so cool that a women's soccer team could sell out the Rose Bowl and a men's football team couldn't. That was the game Brandi Chastain scored the fifth goal in shootouts vs. China. It was an awesome experience to witness first-hand. Those women were my heroes.
Cal is better than other schools because...it overlooks the bay, it's the best public school in the world, the student population is extremely diverse, and it's just a BART ride away from San Francisco, among other things.
Something I learned from my parents is...the importance of a solid work ethic. My grandpa taught my dad, who in turn instilled it in me. Both of them lived lives of honest, hard-working men, and I respect them greatly for that.
If I wasn't a soccer player, I would be...investing my time entirely into something else. I'm one of those people who picks one thing and sticks with it, devoting to it all my time and energy. I happened to choose soccer. If I hadn't chosen soccer, I probably would have chosen a musical instrument and practiced it day and night until I was really good at it. Piano or guitar probably.
Do you have any hidden talents? I can ride a unicycle. That and maybe being able to do 1 1/2 flips off diving boards.
What is one thing about your hometown that you miss? I'm from a suburb of LA called Monrovia, which I like to think of as a small town in a big city. Everyone knows everyone in Monrovia. I like that when I'm on a run or doing errands, I'll always see at least a few people I know. The familiarity is nice.
Which words of phrases do you overuse? "Oh my goosh!" (Yes, that's 'goosh', not a typo), "...disappeared like a fart in the wind" and "you kids these days."
