Billy Allen

Billy Allen joins the Golden Bears as an assistant coach for the 2023 season.

In 2023, Allen helped coach the Bears to their first winning record since 2019, finishing the year at 16-15 (5-15 Pac-12) with an undefeated 11-0 nonconference record. Under his tutelage, three players earned their first career All-Pac-12 awards, with Tara DeSa and Annalea Maeder earning Honorable Mention Status and Maggie Li winning both Freshman of the Year and First Team honors. Li later became the AVCA Pacific West Region Freshman of the Year and was named All-Pacific West Region Honorable Mention, the only freshman to do so. DeSa led the conference in both digs and digs per set, surpassing 500 on the season for the fourth-most in program history, while Maeder turned heads with her first career 1,000-assist season and 46 service aces, the latter of which tied for 10th in the program record book.

He also currently plays professional beach volleyball on the AVP circuit, where he is a 3x AVP Champion. Allen played six years on the Beach National Team, representing the United States all across the world, and made an appearance at the 2019 World Championships in Hamburg, Germany.

Allen has coached at the club, high school, collegiate, and adult levels. Allen also co-hosts the volleyball coaching podcast Coach Your Brains Out and has written two coaching books: Coach Your Brains Out: The Art and Science of Coaching Volleyball and The Inner Knight: Train and Compete Like A Champion.

Allen grew up in Fallbrook, San Diego, and played college volleyball at Cal State Northridge. He married fellow AVP player Janelle Allen in 2009. The two have one son, Ketch.
