Travers Family Head Football Coach Tosh Lupoi announced the return of veteran defensive coach Bob Gregory as the team’s inside linebackers coach on January 15, 2026.
Bob Gregory is in his second year of his second stint at Cal in 2026, serving as the Golden Bears' inside linebackers coach.
One of the nation's most respected defensive assistants, Gregory brings more than four decades of collegiate coaching experience. His career includes two stints each at Cal (2002-09, 2025-present), Oregon (1998-2000, 2022) and Boise State (2001, 2010-13), along with coaching stops at Washington (2014-21), Stanford (2023-24), Willamette and Washington University.
Gregory has spent 16 seasons as a defensive coordinator at five different programs and has coached on seven conference championship teams and 22 bowl teams. Throughout his career, he has helped develop 46 players who have gone on to play in the NFL while earning a reputation as one of the game's top defensive minds and linebacker coaches.
Before returning to Cal, Gregory spent two seasons at Stanford as special teams coordinator and safeties coach after serving as a defensive analyst at Oregon under Travers Family Head Football Coach Tosh Lupoi in 2022.
During his eight seasons at Washington, Gregory served as linebackers coach, special teams coordinator, defensive coordinator and interim head coach in 2021. His defenses consistently ranked among the Pac-12's best, while he coached numerous All-Americans, All-Pac-12 selections and NFL players, including Ben Burr-Kirven, Shaq Thompson, Dante Pettis and Edefuan Ulofoshio. His special teams units also ranked among the nation's best, highlighted by Pettis setting the NCAA career record for punt return touchdowns.
Gregory previously served as Cal's defensive coordinator from 2002-09, helping guide the Bears to one of the most successful stretches in program history. His defenses were regularly among the nation's best, and his 2004 unit finished second nationally in rushing defense and eighth in scoring defense, earning Gregory finalist honors for the Broyles Award, presented annually to the nation's top assistant coach.
At Boise State, Gregory helped lead some of the nation's top defenses during two separate stints, including serving as interim head coach for the 2013 Hawai'i Bowl. His earlier experience also includes coaching at Oregon, Willamette and Washington University, where he began his collegiate coaching career.
A 1987 graduate of Washington State, Gregory earned a bachelor's degree in English after playing linebacker and defensive back for the Cougars. He later earned a master's degree in educational policy from Oregon. Gregory has two sons, Jack and Joe.
