Now in his 32nd year at Cal, Herb Benenson serves as Associate Athletic Director for Communications, overseeing publicity for all 30 Golden Bear athletic programs.
Over the course of his career, Benenson has managed communications efforts for the majority of Cal teams and currently works directly with the women’s swimming & diving program. In addition, he chairs the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame Committee, serves as editor of the Cal Sports Quarterly magazine and is the department’s liaison to the Pac-12 Networks, among other responsibilities.
Benenson began his career as a student assistant at the University of Texas and later served as a graduate assistant at the University of Tennessee. He moved to Berkeley in 1990 as women’s sports information director. He was named assistant athletic director in 2002 and associate AD in 2017.
Benenson earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from Texas in 1985 and an MBA from Tennessee in 1988. He and his wife, Heidi, live in Walnut Creek with their daughter, Jenna.
