Men's Water Polo drops a heartbreaker to No. 2 UCLA

Oct. 20, 2001

PASADENA, CA - No. 5 California was defeated by No. 2 UCLA by an 8-6 score in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo match on Saturday at Rose Bowl Aquatic Center.

Cal's offense was stymied as leading scorer Attila Banhidy collected a pair of ejections in the first period and was held in check for most of the match, while UCLA's Alfonso Tucay scored three of his four goals in the match's first eight minutes as UCLA built a 4-1 advantage.

The Bruins (9-2, 4-0) took a 5-3 lead into the fourth quarter, but Cal (8-3, 2-2) outscored UCLA 3-1 in the final period to force overtime. The Bears found an unusual way to find the tying score in the final half-minute of regulation, as UCLA goalkeeper Brandon Brooks (Jr., Honolulu, HI/Punahou) was ejected. Without a goalkeeper to defend the cage, the Bruin defense allowed Spencer Dornin to tie the score, 6-6, with seven seconds left.

Late in the first overtime, Cal driver Joe Kaiser was kicked out and Brett Ormsby beat Bear goalkeeper Tim Kates to the near post just before the buzzer. Bruin two-meter defender Matt Flesher added an insurance goal in the second extra frame, and the UCLA defense repelled all seven of Cal's possessions in extra time.

For Cal, Spencer Dornin led the way with two scores, and the familiar goalie duo of Bernstein and Kates combined for 13 net-blockers.

The Bears will be back in action tomorrow at Loyola Marymount, to take on the Lions. Match time is set for high noon.
