Field Hockey Edges Fairfield, 3-2

Sept. 2, 2001

BERKELEY - California (2-1) defeated visiting Fairfield (1-2), 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Kleeberger Field. The Bears' Sara Hunt netted the game-winner on a penalty stroke at 12:39 remaining in the game. The free shot was awarded as a result of a Fairfield defender using a part of her body to block a shot on goal.

Cal opened the scoring in the first period when the Bears' Elizabeth Harkins put away a cross from Amber Stockstill with 2:30 left to go in the first half.

In the second half, Fairfield answered back as senior Iza Kotowski scored an unassisted goal off a rebound at 23:39. Harkins put the Bears back in the lead five minutes later, needling through two defenders, then faking a shot, before slapping in her second goal of the game with 18:05 left to go in the match.

The Stags stayed close after Hunt put the Bears up, 3-1, as junior Dani Brown, last year's top returning scorer, closed the gap to within one point with 9:52 remaining in the game.

Cal goalkeeper Emily Rowlen made six saves on the day while her counterpart, Lauren Thomas, tallied seven. The Bears attempted a season-high 20 shots on goal to Fairfield's nine.

The road awaits Cal next week as they play three games in four days. The Bears will face off at Saint Louis Thursday, Sept. 6 and play two neutral site games in St. Louis, MO, versus Dartmouth and Miami (OH) Sept. 7 and 9, respectively.
