No. 4 Bears defeat UCLA, Move on to SoCal Tourney Semifinal

The fourth-ranked Cal men's water polo team (2-0) upset No. 6 UCLA (0-2) in overtime, 11-8, in the Bears' second match of the SoCal Tournament at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium.

The Bruins and Bears were knotted at seven apiece at the end of regulation, forcing overtime action. Cal went on to score four goals, two unanswered, in extra play.

Senior driver Todd Hylton led the Bears with four goals while senior Andrew Stoddard and junior Attila Banhidy notched two goals apiece. In the net, senior Russell Bernstein put in a stellar performance, tallying eight saves in the match.

Banhidy tallied five goals in today's first-round action to lead the Bears, while Stoddard, Hylton and Greg Panawek all contributed four apiece.

The Bears join today's other winners, UC Irvine, Pacific and Stanford in semifinal action on Sunday, September 15. UC Irvine (3-0) defeated Pepperdine (1-1), 8-7, while Pacific improved to 3-0 with their 8-7 upset over No. 2 USC (4-1). The loss was the Trojans first of the year. No. 1 Stanford (4-0) completed a 10-4 win over No. 8 UC San Diego (4-4) as Tony Azevado notched 3 goals.

Cal will face Stanford at 10:20 a.m. on Sunday. If the Bears win that match, they will play the winner of the other semifinal match between UC Irvine and Pacific for the championship at 6:30 p.m.
