No. 1 Cal Water Polo Falls at No. 5 UCLA, 7-6, in Sudden Death Overtime

PASADENA, CA - Sophomore two-meter defender Michael March scored the game winning goal less than two minutes into the sudden-death overtime period to give No. 5 ranked UCLA (9-4, 1-0) a 7-6 victory over No. 1 ranked California (12-4, 0-2) Saturday morning at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena.
Golden Bear senior Greg Panawek had sent the match into sudden death overtime by scoring a goal with less than 10 seconds left in the second three minute overtime period.
UCLA had jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the first quarter. Yet, two unanswered goals from the Bears in the second period gave Cal a 2-1 advantage at halftime.
Three straight goals from the Bruins put them up 4-2 with 1:22 left in the third frame. A Cal goal from senior Sean Vienna narrowed the UCLA lead to one goal heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final period of regulation, UCLA increased its lead back to two goals when the Bruins scored an extra-man goal with 4:20 left in the match. The Bears battled back by scoring twice in the final three minutes to tie the match and send it into extra minutes.
Panawek led Cal with two goals, while Vienna, senior Attila Banhidy, senior Will Quist and freshman Andrija Vasiljevic recorded single goals. Senior goalie Tim Kates had six saves. It was the fifth overtime match for the Bears this season and the fourth sudden death overtime match. Cal is now 3-2 in overtime contests.
