BERKELEY, CA - Led by two goals apiece from senior Attila Banhidy, freshman Brian Kinsel and freshman Andrija Vasiljevic, the No. 2 ranked Cal men's water polo team (14-4, 2-2) defeated No. 8 UC Irvine (8-11, 0-2), 9-5, Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears were also paced by senior goalie Tim Kates' eight saves.
Cal controlled the match throughout, extending its lead to 7-2 after outscoring the Anteaters, 4-1, in the third period. However, UC Irvine got within, 7-4, by scoring the first two goals of the fourth period on shots by Dan Noon and Rick Merlo. The Bears regained control of the match on a goal by freshman Brian Bacharach off an outstanding assist from senior Will Quist with 3:39 left in the contest for a comfortable cushion.
Noon and Phil Garcia led the Anteaters with two goals apiece. Quist and senior Greg Panawek also tallied scores for Cal.
The Bears next host No. 7 ranked Long Beach State, Sunday, Oct. 26 at 12 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
