BERKELEY, CA - The No. 2 ranked Cal men's water polo team (16-4) topped No. 16 UC Davis (13-12), 9-5, Thursday night at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears were led by two goals apiece from senior captain Greg Panawek and true freshmen John Mann and Andrija Vasiljevic. Cal also received outstanding goalie work from senior captain Tim Kates and junior Derek Schauffler. Kates played the first two quarters and recorded seven saves. Schauffler played the third and fourth periods and finished with nine saves.
UC Davis' top scorer was senior George Dingeldei with three goals. Seniors Attila Banhidy and Will Quist, and junior Keola Richardson also tallied goals for the Bears.
Cal jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first period on goals by Panawek, Quist and Richardson, and never looked back. The Bears scored three more times in the second quarter to take a 6-1 halftime lead. The Aggies got within 6-3 on goals by Peter Jacobson and Tom Jay in the third period, but Mann quickly gave Cal back its cushion by scoring back-to-back goals with 3:09 and 2:23 left in the quarter.
The Bears will next host Pacific, Sunday, Nov. 2 at 12 p.m., for an MPSF match.
