No. 2 Cal Men's Water Polo Defeats No. 7 Long Beach State, 12-9

BERKELEY, CA - Bolstered by a four-goal second period, the No. 2 ranked Cal men's water polo team (15-4, 3-2) defeated No. 7 Long Beach State (12-8, 2-1), 12-9, Sunday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears were led by senior Attila Banhidy's three goals. Cal also received two goals apiece from senior Will Quist, redshirt freshman Brian Kinsel and true freshman Andrija Vasiljevic.
Long Beach State was led by freshman Reid Tomassi's five goals. Freshman Brian Bacharach, freshman John Mann and sophomore Tom Kurth also tallied goals for the Bears.
The two teams were tied, 3-3, after the first period when the 49ers' Blake Bartak scored a goal with time expiring. Quist gave Cal a 4-3 lead on a nice counter attack pass from goalie Nate Bennett with 5:29 in the second period. Tomassi again tied the match with a six-on-five goal with 3:52 in the period. From there, the Bears took control of the contest with a pair of Kinsel goals and a goal by Banhidy with two seconds left in the half for a 7-4 lead. Long Beach State never got closer than three goals after that point.
The Bears next travel to No. 14 UC Davis, Friday, Oct. 31 at 4 p.m., before returning to Spieker Aquatics Complex to host Pacific, Sunday, Nov. 2 at 12 p.m.
