No. 2 Cal Water Polo Defeats No. 14 Pacific, 8-4

BERKELEY, CA - The No. 2 ranked Cal men's water polo team (17-4, 4-2) defeated No. 14 Pacific (5-15, 0-7), 8-4, Sunday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears were led by two goals apiece from senior All-American Attila Banhidy and true freshmen John Mann, and 10 saves from senior goalie Tim Kates.
Pacific's top scorer was senior Eddie Wisniewski with two goals, while freshman goalie Tom Markel recorded 11 saves, including five saves in the first period. Seniors Greg Panawek and Will Quist, sophomore Tom Kurth and true freshman Marty Matthies also tallied goals for the Bears.
The Tigers had jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals by Wisniewski and Clint McLaughlin. Cal responded by outscoring Pacific, 6-0, in the second period on goals by Mann, Panawek, Quist, Banhidy, Matthies and finally Kurth with five seconds left in the period. Both teams scored a pair of goals in the second half for the final 8-4 margin.
The Bears will next host No. 3 ranked and Bay Area rival Stanford, Sunday, Nov. 9 at 12 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
