No. 4 Cal Men's Water Polo Wins First Two Matches of NorCal Tournament

STANFORD, CA - The No. 4 ranked California men's water polo team (7-3) won its first two matches of the 2003 NorCal Tournament at Stanford, defeating No. 16 Queens College, 9-2, and No. 5 UC San Diego, 9-5, Saturday at Belardi Pool. The Bears will next face No. 1 ranked USC, Sunday, Oct. 5 in a 10:20 a.m. semifinal match at the Avery Stadium Pool. Cal had fallen to the top-ranked Trojans, 10-8, in the last meeting between the two teams, Sept. 27 at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
In the 9-2 victory over Queens College, whom the Bears had defeated 14-6 in last year's NCAA first round match-up, Cal was led by senior Will Quist's two goals, while seven other Bears scored a goal apiece. Cal had jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the half and only allowed single goals in the third and fourth periods.
In the 9-5 win over UC San Diego, the Bears' top scorers were redshirt freshman Brian Kinsel with three goals, and true freshman John Mann's two goals. Cal dominated the match by exploding for six goals in the second period. Senior goalie Tim Kates had five saves for the Bears.

California, fourth-ranked in the nation, jumped to a 5-0 halftime and never looked back in scoring a 9-2 victory over No. 16 Queens College. Eight Golden Bear players scored goals two by senior Will Quist, both in the first half.

California, ranked fourth in the nation, scored all its goal in the first half and then held on for a 9-5 victory over fifth-ranked UC San Diego. Six of Cal's nine goals came in the second period, two each by John Mann and Brian Kinsel. UCSD outscored the Golden Bears, 3-0, in third period, but the Tritons could not get any closer.
