No. 1 Cal Men's Water Polo Defeats No. 12 Princeton, 12-7

BERKELEY, CA - The No. 1 ranked California men's water polo team (10-3) defeated No. 12 Princeton (11-2), 12-7, Friday evening at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal was led by freshman John Mann's four goals, and two goals from redshirt freshman Brian Kinsel. Sophomore goalie Nate Bennett tallied 11 saves.
Six other Bears (Beau Schuster, Justin Fassnacht, Kevin Koblik, Sean Vienna, Attila Banhidy, Andrija Vasiljevic) scored single goals in the evening for Cal, while junior goalie Derek Schauffler played the final 3:55 of the fourth quarter and recorded two saves. The Tigers were led by Dan McKenna and Reid Joseph with two goals apiece. Goalie Peter Sabbatini finished with seven saves, including four saves in the first period.
The top ranked Bears were able to break a 1-1 tie after the first period by outscoring Princeton 4-0 in the second quarter to hold a 5-1 halftime lead. Mann scored two of his four goals in the second period. The Tigers were able to get within 6-3 when Mike McKenna score with 3:21 in the third, but Cal responded with a goal from redshirt freshman Koblik and a nice backhanded goal from senior Sean Vienna to give itself a cushion.
Both teams score four goals each the rest of the way, with Mann scoring twice in the fourth period, as well a drawing a four-meter penalty shot that was scored by Banhidy.
The Bears will next play a doubleheader, Saturday, Oct. 11, playing No. 12 UC Davis at 10 a.m. and No. 17 Air Force at 11:45 a.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
