No. 2 Cal Water Polo Topped by No. 3 Stanford, 10-8

BERKELEY, CA - The No. 2 ranked Cal men's water polo team (18-5, 4-3 MPSF) lost to No. 3 Stanford (16-3, 5-1 MPSF), 10-8, Sunday afternoon before a sellout crowd of 1,120 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears were led by three goals from redshirt freshman two-meter man Brian Kinsel, but a 4-0 run by the Cardinal in the third period proved too much for Cal. Stanford was led by two goals apiece from Tony Azevedo, Greg Crum and Peter Varellas.
The Bears started out well, outscoring the Cardinal, 3-1, in the first period on a pair of Kinsel goals, and a goal by senior Attila Banhidy. Cal stretched its lead to 6-3 at the half on another goal by Kinsel and two goals by senior Will Quist. Senior goalie Tim Kates had seven saves in the first two quarters for the Bears.
Stanford then began its run in the third period with goals by Varellas, Thomas Hopkins, Crum and finally Matt Moser with three seconds in the quarter for a 7-6 lead - the first lead of the match for the Cardinal. Stanford was bolstered by three saves by goalie Chad Taylor in the third period.
Cal was able to tie the match, 7-7, with 6:17 in the fourth quarter on a goal by redshirt freshman Brian Bacharach. Stanford responded with a goal by Mike Derse that barely slid by Kates, and a goal by Crum by 3:16 left in the final period. The Bears were able to get within 9-8 on a goal by freshman Andrija Vasiljevic, off a ricochet from a four-meter penalty shot, with 2:58 left, but Azevedo was able to seal the Cardinal win with a long shot with minute to go for the final 10-8 margin.
It was the final home match for 10 Cal seniors - Kates, Quist, Banhidy, Greg Panawek, Sean Vienna, Milos Ribic, Beau Schuster, Jason Malinsky, Justin Fassnacht and Jeff Leeper.
In the morning match, Leeper scored two goals to lead Cal past UC Santa Cruz, 11-5.
The Bears will next travel to No. 9 ranked UC Santa Barbara, Saturday, Nov. 15 at 3 p.m. at the UCSB Recreation Center Pool, before again facing Stanford, Saturday, Nov. 22 at 10 a.m. for the Big Splash at the Avery Aquatic Center on the Stanford campus.
