SAN DIEGO, CA - The No. 3 ranked California men's water polo team (2-0) defeated No. 6 ranked UC San Diego (4-2), 11-8, Friday afternoon at UCSD's Canyonview Pool. Cal was led by senior All-American Attila Banhidy's four goals, while senior Will Quist and true freshman Andrija Vasiljevic added two goals apiece for the Bears. Brian Kinsel, Greg Panawek and Brian Bacharach also tallied goals for Cal.
The Tritons, who finished fourth in the nation last year, jumped out to a 4-2 lead at halftime, with the Bears' goals coming from redshirt freshman Kinsel, and then Banhidy scored with just over three minutes to go in the half.
After trailing at halftime, the Bears got two quick goals by seniors Quist and Panawek to open the third period and knotted the score, 4-4. UCSD's Jonathan Hopkins scored at 4:20 to put UCSD back on top, but Banhidy and freshman Bacharach then scored within 31 seconds of each other midway through the frame to regain the upper hand. Once again, the Tritons tied the match, this time at 6-6.
UCSD took the lead one last time, at 8-7, 28 seconds into the fourth quarter, on a shot by Steven Jendrusina. Cal, however, finally took control after that, scoring four unanswered goals the rest of the way, with two of the points coming from freshman Vasiljevic for the 11-8 final.
Nate Barrett, a sophomore goalie for Cal, recorded five saves for the Bears. Cal was also five-of-11 in man-up situations, while the Tritons converted on four of their 15 opportunities.
Both Cal and UC San Diego will now head to Irvine to compete in the Southern California Tournament hosted by UC Irvine at the Anteater Aquatics Complex. The Bears will face No. 12 Loyola Marymount at 1:30 p.m. and then 10th-ranked Pacific at 5:50 p.m. The 12-team tournament, which features 11 of the top 12 teams in the latest national poll, along with No. 19 Cal Baptist, will conclude on Sunday.
