No. 3 Cal Men's Water Polo Wins Two Tough Matches at SoCal Tournament

IRVINE, CA - The No. 3 ranked California men's water polo team (4-0) won two tough matches Saturday during the first day of the Southern California Tournament at Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine, Calif. In the 1:30 p.m. match, the Bears were able to defeat Loyola Marymount in sudden death overtime, 7-6, on a shot by true freshman Andrija Vasiljevic. Cal was then able to top Pacific, 12-8, in a 5:50 p.m. match.
The Bears will next face top-ranked and Bay Area rival Stanford in the tournament semifinal Sunday at 10:15 a.m. If Cal defeats the Cardinal, it will play for the tournament title at 3:40 p.m.
In the Loyola Marymount match, Vasiljevic scored his second goal of the game 3:26 into sudden-victory overtime to give the Bears their 7-6 win over Loyola Marymount. The 12th-ranked Lions were on the verge of the upset, but Cal was awarded a penalty shot with one second remaining in regulation and the Bears' Attila Banhidy converted to send the game into overtime. Neither team scored in the regular overtime of two three-minute periods prior to the winning goal by Vasiljevic. Banhidy also scored a pair of goals in the game, while Tamas Szego led LMU with three goals and Ryan Chapatte added two. The Lions' Ian Elliott was brilliant in goal stopping 17 Cal shots. Senior goalie Tim Kates had eight saves for the Bears.
Against Pacific, Cal broke away from a tight match with three consecutive goals to start the fourth quarter in defeating No. 10 Pacific, 12-8. With the win, the Bears advance to Sunday's championship semifinal in a rematch of the 2002 NCAA title match against Stanford. Freshman John Mann, redshirt freshman Brian Bacharach and senior Jeff Leeper scored within two 1/2 minutes of the fourth quarter to give Cal an 11-6 lead and to put the game away. Mann, Bacharach, Brian Kinsel and Will Quist scored two goals each. Julian Gonzalez, Eddie Wisniewski and Adam Zobler scored two apiece for the Tigers.
