Cal takes fourth place in SoCal Tournament

IRVINE, Calif. -- No. 3 California battled No. 4 Pepperdine to an eventual 9-8 overtime loss in the third-place game of the Southern California Tournament held at UC Irvine on Sunday. Earlier in the day, the Golden Bears (4-2) lost to top-ranked Stanford, 10-5, in the semifinal round.
John Mann scored three times against the Waves in addition to his one goal against Stanford. Brian Kinsel and Attila Banhidy added three goals apiece on the day.
In the third-place game, Mann scored all his goals in the second half, to no avail. Pepperdine freshman Garritt Barth scored a power-play goal 5:40 into sudden-victory overtime to give the Waves the victory.
Cal returns to action on Thursday, hosting BYU-Hawaii in its home opener at 7:30 p.m. at Spieker Pool. The Bears host USC on Saturday at 11 a.m.
