No. 4 Cal Men's Water Polo (5-2) Defeats BYU-Hawaii, 17-7

BERKELEY, CA - The No. 4 ranked California men's water polo team (5-2) dominated No. 18 ranked BYU-Hawaii (1-2), 17-7, Thursday evening at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal was paced by senior All-American Attila Banhidy's five goals. Junior two-meter man Keola Richardson added two goals and 10 other Bears tallied single goals apiece.
Sophomore goalie Nate Bennett played the majority of the match for Cal and finished with five saves. Junior goalie Derek Schauffler also had a save for the Bears.
Cal jumped out ahead of the Seasiders early in the contest, holding a 3-1 lead after the first period. The Bears then outscored BYU-Hawaii, 5-3, in the second period, and held an 8-4 lead at halftime. Banhidy scored all of his team-high five goals in the first two periods and has scored 18 goals in the team's first seven matches of 2003.
Cal went on to outscore the Seasiders, 9-3, in the third and fourth quarters for the final 17-7 margin. The Bears next begin Mountain Pacific Sports Federation competition as they host No. 1 ranked USC, Saturday, Sept. 27 at 12:30 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
