LONG BEACH, CA -
California sophomore Brian Bacharach scored both goals in overtime to lead the No. 5-ranked Golden Bears to an 11-9 overtime win over Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match at the Campus Pool. Cal improved to 11-6 overall and 1-3 in the MPSF while ending a five-game losing streak. The 49ers, ranked No. 9, fell to 10-7 and 1-1 in league play.
Long Beach looked as if it was going to come away with another upset win after Brett McCleave's third goal of the day, with 1:51 left, gave Long Beach a 9-7 lead. Cal came right back to score on its next possession, as sophomore Brian Kinsel scored his second goal at 1:26. The 49ers held on to the ball and retained possession after a shot by Jay Gerardi was deflected out of bounds by Cal goalie Nate Bennett, giving the 49ers a new shot clock of thirty-five seconds with just under a minute remaining. The 49ers then turned the ball over with thirty seconds left to play. Cal was able to score with just four seconds left in regulation as sophomore Marty Matthies' follow shot off a Thomas Onyshko save tied the game at 9-9.
In overtime, Bacharach scored at 2:23 in the first overtime and sealed the win at 2:13 in the second OT. Cal goalie Bennett had a strong outing for the Golden Bears, finishing with 12 goalie saves, including four in the overtime periods. His counterpart Onyshko also had 12 saves.
McCleave and Gerardi both tallied three goals for the 49ers, while Brad Scoles added two. Bacharach, Kinsel, John Mann and Andrija Vasiljevic all had two goals for Cal.
The game was tight throughout as no team led by more than one goal until Long Beach took an 8-6 advantage on McCleave's second goal of the day at 6:33 in the fourth quarter. After Vasiljevic scored at 4:41 to cut the deficit to 8-7, McCleave's goal at 1:51 looked as if it would be the game-winner, giving LBSU a 9-7 lead.
Cal next plays at UC Irvine on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Anteaters Aquatics Complex.
