BERKELEY, CA - Sophomore John Mann racked up an impressive five goals as the No. 4-ranked California men's water polo team (14-7) defeated No. 15-ranked Pacific (9-11), 12-7, in a non-conference match Thursday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Mann, who scored a one goal in every period, including two in the first, has scored at least one goal in every match this season. It was the third time this year Mann has tallied five goals in a match.

Behind Mann and sophomore Andrija Vasiljevic's first quarter goals, the Bears jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. Pacific senior Julian Gonzalez, off of a four-meter penalty shot, got Pacific on the scoreboard with 1:00 left in the first period. Cal kept control of the game throughout the second period, owning a 5-2 lead at the half.

Cal sophomore Brian Bacharach scored the first goal of the second half with 6:14 left in the third period to give the Bears a 6-2 lead. Pacific sophomore Matt Turnbull responded immediately with a goal to get the Tigers within a hat-trick, 6-3. Bacharach and freshman Michael Sharf scored at 3:58 and 2:45, respectively; following the Bear's pair of goals, Pacific's Gonzalez and freshman Dragon Bakic scored their own couplet at 2:23 and 1:09, respectively, to bring the Tigers back within three goals leading into the final quarter.

Cal extended their already healthy lead in the fourth period scoring four goals to Pacific's two. Bacharach scored two quick goals to open the fourth quarter at 5:29 and 5:01. Pacific's sophomore Kenny Yamanoto scored a goal with 4:30 to go in the fourth quarter. Mann scored his fifth goal with 3:22 left. Cal junior Tom Kurth scored the Bear's final goal with nine seconds left in the match. Yamanoto scored his second goal of the game with less than one second left on the game clock, for the final 12-7 margin.

The Bears next host UC Davis, Saturday, Nov. 6 at 10 a.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
