ANNAPOLIS, MD - The California men's water polo team (2-0) defeated Johns Hopkins, 18-2, and St. Francis, 10-7, Saturday in the first day of the Navy Open in Annapolis, Maryland. Versus Johns Hopkins, the Golden Bears scored five goals in each of the first three quarters to cruise to the 18-2 win. Sophomore Brian Bacharach paced Cal with four goals, followed by three goals apiece from sophomores John Mann and Brian Kinsel. Senior Keola Richardson and true freshman Mike Hayes added two goals and four other Bears had single goals (sophomore Andrija Vasiljevic, freshmen Kevin Platshon, Michael Sharf and Zac Monsees). Cal took a 7-2 halftime lead against St. Francis and held on for the 10-7 victory. Kinsel paced the Bears with three goals and Bacharach and Mann had two goals apiece. Junior goalie Nate Bennett finished with an impressive nine saves. "In the match against Johns Hopkins our team speed was too much for them," said Cal associate head coach Boyd Lachance. "We put a lot of defensive pressure on the ball and were able to take advantage of their mistakes. St. Francis was an experienced team that had defeated Long Beach State by one goal in last year's tournament here. They were a good ball control team. It was a close match." The Bears will next play host Navy at 9:55 a.m. and Bucknell at 2:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5.
