No. 7 Cal Women's Water Polo Defeats No. 15 Hartwick

BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 7-ranked California women's water polo team defeated No. 15-ranked Hartwick, 9-7, in a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. California's Brittani Llorente scored with 5:46 remaining in the second period, tying the game at 1-1 and starting the Bears on a streak of five unanswered goals. Cal allowed four straight Hawk goals to follow, but regained the lead, eventually winning with a final score of 9-7 at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley. The Hawks scored their first goal with 4:09 remaining in the first period, but Cal never allowed another Hawk lead. Hartwick drops to 14-5, while the Bears improved to 12-7.

The Hawks scored first on Bronwen Knox's goal with 4:09 remaining in the first period. Neither team scored for the remainder of the period, ending the first period with a 1-0 Hartwick lead.

Llorente scored Cal's first goal with 5:46 remaining in the first half, followed by three more Bears' goals by Allison Gold (3:55), Elsie Windes (3:18), Lauren McGee (2:48). Cal entered the halftime break with a 4-1 lead over Hartwick.

Gold opened the second half with her second goal and Cal's fifth straight at 6:32 remaining in the third period. The Hawks scored four straight goals to tie the game at 5-5. Maureen Wertz and Kimberly Sumich scored one goal a piece and Knox scored two at 6:06, 3:56, 3:16 and 2:15 respectively. Vanessa Lindsey scored for the Bears with 53 seconds remaining in the third period to give Cal a 6-5 lead heading into the fourth period

Windes and Breana Allison scored two goal with 5:58 and 4:09, respectively, remaining in the fourth period, but Sophie Smith scored two goals for the Hawks at 1:51 and 1:05 remaining in the fourth period bringing Hartwick within one goal of Cal. Windes scored the final goal of the game with 48 seconds remaining in the fourth period to give the Bears a 9-7 victory over the Hartwick.

The Hawks were led by three goals from Knox, two goals from Smith and one goal from Sumich and Wertz, while the Bears were lead by three goals from Windes, two goals from McGee and one goal from Allison, Gold, Llorente and Lindsey. Alex Feune de Columbi made eight saves in net for Cal, four in the first period, while Olivia Colebourne made seven saves for Hartwick.

The Bears will next face No. 1-ranked UCLA, Saturday, April 9, at 12 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
