The Cal women's water polo team defeated the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, 10-9 in overtime, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Sunday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Seven different Golden Bears provided goals in the winning effort, including a lob shot from Lauren McGee at the 2:33 mark in the second overtime period for the game-winner. Cal improved to 13-8 overall and 4-5 in the MPSF, while UC Santa Barbara fell to 13-9 overall and 4-5 in the MPSF.
The Bears jumped to an early 3-0 lead, scoring their third time at the 1:44 mark in the first quarter. With only 13 seconds left in the quarter, the Gauchos cut the lead down to two when Dana Saign scored off a long pass from Aimee Stachowski after a Cal turnover.
Cal responded quickly in the second period, with a power play goal from Brittani Llorente at the 5:22 mark. Each team would score one more time before the Gauchos scored two in the final minute of the first half, bringing the score within one going into halftime.
The Bears started off strong in the second half, with another goal from Llorente at the 6:25 mark. Gaucho ZiZi Clark responded with a goal of her own at the 4:29 mark, off a long pass from goalie Christy Medgeovich. Cal's Katie Card would be the last to score in the third period on a fast break at the 2:40 mark.
The Bears' two-goal lead was trimmed quickly in the last period of regular play when Dana Saign scored her third goal of the afternoon at the 6:17 mark. Cal's Allison Gold then scored her second goal of the day at the 5:02 mark, followed by a power play goal from Gaucho Mica Bell with 3:35 remaining to play. Elsie Windes put one in the back of the net from far outside with the shot clock winding down at the 3:02 mark, bringing the Bears' lead back up to two. In the final two minutes of regulation play, the Gauchos tied up the game for the first time all afternoon with goals from Jennifer D'Anna and Becky Laird.
The first period of overtime play went scoreless with a couple of misses and a two blocks from both Medgovich and Cal goalie Alex Feune de Colombi. McGee put in her only shot of the game at the 2:33 mark in the second overtime period to win the Golden Bears the 10-9 victory.
Cal will next play a MPSF match at San Jose State, Sunday, Apr. 17 at 1 p.m.
