Cal Women Take 3rd, Men 6th at MPSF Indoor Championships

SEATTLE, Wash. - Junior Ed Wright won the men's high jump in an indoor school record to help the California men take sixth place at the MPSF Indoor Championships on Saturday at Dempsey Indoor, while junior Alysia Johnson's second-place finish in the women's 800 meters helped the Golden Bears women take third on the last day of the conference meet. The Bears women compiled 79 points and the Cal men had 64.
Arizona State scored 135 points to win the women's team title and host Washington scored 109 to win the men's competition.
Wright had an NCAA Championships provisional qualifying and lifetime-best mark of 2.20 meters (7-02.50) in the high jump, while Johnson ran a provisional qualifying time of 2:05.63 in the 800. Wright's mark tied the Cal indoor record set by Teak Wilburn in 2004 and moves Wright to eight place on Cal's all-time men's high jump list.
Also on the men's side, Cal senior Giliat Ghebray also ran a provisional qualifying time, taking third place in the 3000 meters with a lifetime-best 7:56.51. Ghebray's brother, Yosef, a freshman for the Bears, ran a lifetime-best and Cal freshman-record 8:05.25 to take ninth in the 3000. Yosef Ghebray's time also moves him up to third place on Cal's all-time list.
Cal junior Cassandra Strickland took second in the women's triple jump with a provisional qualifying mark of 12.98 meters (42-07). Also, in the women's 4x400-meter relay, the Bears quartet of sophomore Evelyn Smith, junior Brook Turner, sophomore Mackenzie Pierce, and Johnson ran a provisional qualifying time and Cal indoor record of 3:37.64 to take third. That time moves the Cal relay to fourth on the all-time list.
Bears freshman Kimyon Broom tied her lifetime-best 8.50 to take third in the women' 60-meter hurdles and sophomore teammate Inika McPherson had a season-best mark of 1.77 meters (5-09.75) to take second in the women's high jump.
In the women's shot put, Cal sophomore Missy Faubus had Cal's best finish (3rd in 15.03 meters, 49-03.75), but sophomore teammate Emilee Strot and senior teammate Kelechi Anyanwu notched lifetime bests when they tied for fourth with a mark of 14.97 meter (49-01.50). Anyanwu and Strot are tied for sixth on Cal's all-time list.
Junior John Ludden had Cal's best finish in the men's shot put, taking 11th in the a lifetime-best 16.60 meters (54-05.50). Cal sophomore Sean Carey and junior teammate Andres Perezchica had lifetime bests in the men's 800, with Carey taking third in 1:50.29 and Perezchica finishing 12th in 1:53.26.
The Cal men's 4x400-meter relay, composed of senior Nestor Solis, junior Jonathan Suddaby, sophomore Jake Hanson and junior Francis Gadayan, ran a season-best 3:14.52 to take fourth.
Cal is next in action next Friday and Saturday, March 2-3, at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Some Bears will head to the NCAA Last-Chance Qualifier back in Seattle on March 3.
