TUCSON, Ariz. - California senior Kelechi Anyanwu threw the discus a school-record 185-11 (56.66 meters) and the Golden Bears reached regional qualifying marks or times in 13 events in the Jim Click Shootout at Roy P. Drachman Stadium. Cal and host Arizona combined to give the Pac-10 a victory over the SEC and Big 12 in the three-way conference meet. Anyanwu, whose mark won the women's discus event, moved past the record of 181-02 by former Bears star Sheni Russell.
The Pac-10 collected 510.50 total points, with 241.50 from Cal and 269 from Arizona, to the SEC's 451.50 (South Carolina 185, Arkansas 143.50, Florida 123) and the Big 12's 443 (Texas Tech 226, Kansas State 217).
The Pac-10 men also outscored their opponents, with 283.50 points (Arizona 146, Cal 137.50) to the Big 12's 218.50 (Texas Tech 116, Kansas State 102.50) and the SEC's 206 (Florida 123, South Carolina 83). In the women's competition, the SEC won with 245.50 points (Arkansas 143.50, South Carolina 102) to the Pac-10's 227 (Arizona 123, Cal 104) and the Big 12's 224.50 (Kansas State 114.50, Texas Tech 110).
Anyanwu also qualified for the NCAA West Regional in the shot put, with her lifetime-best mark of 49-9.75 (15.18 meters) that placed her in a second-place tie with sophomore teammate Missy Faubus. Bears sophomore Emilee Strot was right behind her teammates with a lifetime best and qualifying mark of 48-11 (14.91) in fourth place.
Also in the women's discus, Strot recorded a qualifying mark of 170-10 (52.07) in third place and Faubus notched a qualifying mark of 157.09 (48.09) in sixth place.
Among those Bears achieving regional qualifying marks or times was junior David Torrence, who won the men's 800-meter run in a regional qualifying time of 1:50.23, junior teammate John Ludden, who notched a qualifying mark of 195-0 (59.43) to win the men's hammer throw, sophomore teammate Mark Matusak, who ran a regional qualifying time of 3:46.20 to win the men's 1,500, and junior teammate Ed Wright, who had a qualifying mark of 7-0.50 (2.15) to tie for the win in the men's high jump.
Cal freshman Michael Coe also reached a regional qualifying time in the 1,500 with a 3:46.48 that gave him second place behind Matusak. Coe's time of 8:22.01 gave him a second-place finish in the 3,000 meters and made him the 10th-fastest Bear all time in that event.
Bears junior Brook Turner ran a qualifying time of 54.47 and took sixth place in the women's 400-meter dash. She also ran a lifetime-best 24.10 to move into 10th place in Cal's all-time record books in the women's 200-meter dash. Sophomore teammate Inika McPherson recorded a qualifying mark of 5-8.75 (1.75) to tie for third in the women's high jump.
In other notables performances, Cal freshman Rowena Tam's 11:19.60 in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase moved her to third place on Cal's all-time list and gave her third place in Tucson. Senior teammate Jonas Hallgrimsson won the men's javelin with a mark of 201-01 (61.29) and junior teammate Cassandra Strickland won the women's triple jump with a mark of 41-5.75 (12.64).
Cal competes at two meets next week, as the Bears host the Cal Multi-Events Meet on March 28-29 at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley and then heads down to the Farm for the Stanford Invitational March 30-31.
