Bears Cruise Past Lady Lions in NCAA First Round

BERKELEY - The No. 10 California women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, shutting out 74th-ranked Southeastern Louisiana, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Center. The Golden Bears won both doubles matches in commanding fashion and carried that momentum into singles, winning three matches in straight sets.
In doubles, the fifth-ranked tandem of Susie Babos and Zsuzsanna Fodor recorded the first victory, beating Breda Kovac and Nina Knavs, 8-2. The Bears secured the doubles point on the third court where sophomores Bojana Bobusic and Claire Ilcinkas defeated Jana Simurkova and Aleksandra Coric, 8-3.
It was Fodor's dominance on the second court in singles that set the tone for the match. She tallied the first singles win in a one-sided contest, knocking off Iva Velkovska, 6-1, 6-0. Fodor won five games in a row in the first set and then was perfect in the second.
The Bears turned in strong performances on the fourth and fifth courts by juniors Cristina Visico and Stephanie Kusano to clinch the victory. Visico defeated Bonnie Phillips, 6-1, 6-1, and Kusano beat Simurkova, 6-3, 6-1. It was Kusano's win that ended the contest.
On the top court, Babos was on the verge of winning her match against Emilija Arnaudovska. She led 5-3 in the second set after taking the first, 6-4, when the match was called after Kusano's victory.
Cal (20-6) will play the winner of the match between No. 18 Arizona State and No. 46 UNLV tomorrow at 12 noon. The winner of that match heads to Athens Ga., for the Round of 16, which begins May 18.
