SEATTLE - The No. 13 California women's soccer team lost a close Pac-10 Conference match, 3-2, to Washington in Seattle on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears held a 2-1 lead before surrendering two Husky goals late in the second half. With the loss, Cal drops to 9-5-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the Pac-10 while UW earned their first conference win to bring them to 10-5-0 and 1-3-0 in the Pac-10.
"First I credit Washington for the way they played today," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "Sadly we again gave the game away after leading after halftime. Our decision making and execution were at an all-time low and we simply cannot afford this type of performance."
The Bears got their first goal 23:13 into the first half. After Washington goalie Kari Davidson blocked a shot from sophomore forward Alex Morgan, senior forward Valerie Barnes knocked in the rebound to the lower left corner to score. Cal held a 1-0 lead when UW's Kate Deines scored less than two minutes into the second half on a shot from one yard out off a rebound following a save by Cal junior keeper Gina Pellegrini.
The Bears earned an indirect kick after being fouled in the 68th minute. Sophomore defender/midfielder Megan Jesolva made the first touch and freshman midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir shot from the left side for her second goal of the year.
The Huskies got two goals from Veronica Perez - one at 74:14 and the other with seven minutes to play - to take the lead late in the game. The Bears worked for several solid shots on goal in the final 10 minutes, but the Davidson made three stops in the second half to secure the victory for Washington.
Barnes and Morgan led the Bears with four shots each. Pellegrini had four saves in the box. Cal again outshot its opponent, today by three, 15-12.
The Bears continue their Pac-10 Conference schedule at home next weekend against Arizona State on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and at 1 p.m. on Sunday versus Arizona.
