EUGENE, Ore. -
Senior Martin Maric successfully defended his NCAA West Regional championship from 2008 when he took top honors in the discus in the 2009 competition Saturday at Hayward Field on the Oregon campus. Maric captured California's lone regional title, as he recorded a season-best throw of 200-11 (61.24m). The Cal men took eighth overall with 31 points and the Cal women finished in seventh with 42 points.
"We had some people really step up, and we also had some people who didn't do as well as we had hoped," said director of track and field Tony Sandoval. "Tracey Stewart had the jump of her life today and Martin's regional title is something that was very special. Brook Turner and Kandi Bonty both did a great job this weekend, individually qualifying for NCAAs. Overall, I think we will have eight women, six men and the women's 4x100 relay at NCAAs."
Sophomore Cherrelle Garrett notched a pair of second-place finishes. In the final of 100-meter dash, Garrett crossed the finish line with a time of 11.39. She also ran the final leg of Cal's second-place 4x100-meter relay that clocked a season-best time of 44.67. The men's 4x100 also tallied a season-best time of 40.43 and finished in sixth overall.
Junior Tracey Stewart turned in a personal-best performance in the triple jump, recording a mark of 42-3.50 (12.89m) to place fifth overall.
Seniors Brook Turner and Kandi Bonty each finished in the top 5 in the final of the 400. Turner came in fourth (53.60), while Bonty secured a personal best for the second straight day with her time of 53.70 to take fifth overall. Senior Francis Gadayan took fifth in the 800 (1:50.60).
Senior Inika McPherson, the 2009 Pac-10 High Jump champion, came in fifth in that event with her score of 5-8.50 (1.74m). McPherson tied with two other jumpers for fifth, but came in second in the jump-off for the final automatic qualification spot for NCAAs.
The automatic NCAA qualifiers based on this weekend's performances are - Martin Maric (discus), Francis Gadayan (800), Katie Morgan (pole vault), Tracey Stewart (triple jump), Cherrelle Garrett (100), Brook Turner (400), Kandi Bonty (400) and the women's 4x100-meter relay.
Cal has next week off as it prepares for the NCAA Championships from June 10-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
