No. 3 Cal Men's Water Polo Defeats Santa Clara, 14-9, and UCSB, 12-8, at NorCal Invitational

STANFORD, CALIF. - The No. 3-ranked Cal men's water polo team (7-0) started off the 2009 NorCal Invitational 2-0 with a 14-9 victory over Santa Clara and a 12-8 win over No. 6 UC Santa Barbara. The Golden Bears were led by sophomore Cory Nasoff's five goals against the Broncos, and three goals apiece by junior Brian Dudley and sophomore Ivan Rackov versus the Gauchos. Sophomore goalie Wil Toppen had an impressive 15 saves against UC Santa Barbara as well.
Cal will next face host Stanford at 11:10 a.m. at Avery Aquatics Center in the tournament's semifinal.
"We started off slow this morning, but Santa Clara played very well," said Cal coach Kirk Everist. "I was happy with how we responded with UC Santa Barbara. We had some players like Spencer White and Wil Toppen really step up, which is a really great sign. We have a tough challenge tomorrow with Stanford, who is a very experienced team."
