TEMPE, Ariz. - Playing behind for four innings against Syracuse on the final day of the Kajikawa Classic, the No. 3/4 California softball team sprung to life with three runs in the fifth and another trio in the seventh for a 6-3 win over the Orange on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears close out their desert trip with a perfect 4-0 record while SU falls to 3-2.
The Orange struck first with a homer in the second, but the California bats came alive in the top of the fifth, when the Bears scored three runs off two hits and two pass balls. Cal tacked on another three runs in the top of the seventh. Jasmin Watson dished out her third homer of the season and second of the day to bring her Orange within three at 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh.
Arianna Erceg earned the start and only allowed the one hit in three innings of work. Jolene Henderson came in to start the bottom of the fourth and allowed the second Watson homer and fanned three.
Britt Vonk drove in a team-high two runs while Jace Williams, Breana Kostreba and Cheyenne Cordes each had one RBI.
Bottom of the Second - California 0, Syracuse 1:
With a 1-0 count, Jasmine Watson homered to left center.
Top of the Fifth - California 3, Syracuse 1:
Lindsey Ziegenhirt walked and LaRisa Jones replaced her at first as a pinch runner. With a thwack of the bat, Frani Echavarria sent the ball flying into center field to put runners at first and second. Jamia Reid moved Jones to third and Echavarria to second with a slapping ground out to second. Britt Vonk put the ball down the right-field line to plate Jones and Echavarria. Two pass balls moved Vonk from second to third and then home to put the Bears up by two.
Top of the Seventh - California 3, Syracuse 1:
Frani Echavarria walked, Britt Vonk singled down the left-field line and Valerie Arioto walked to juice the bases for Jace Williams. Williams waited out a six-pitch at-bat for an RBI walk, and Kostreba followed suit. Cheyenne Cordes flew out to left, but it was not unproductive for Arioto tagged and scored.
Bottom of the Seventh - California 6, Syracuse 3:
Watson hit her second homer of the day with a shot to left, plating two.
Next Time on the Diamond:
The Bears head to Las Vegas for the Louisville Slugger Classic from Feb. 17-19. Cal faces off against DePaul (Feb. 17), San Jose State (Feb. 18), UC Riverside (Feb. 18) and LSU (Feb. 19).
