Esparza 21st in Hammer; Jones 24th in Triple Jump

June 8, 2012

DES MOINES, Iowa - Two Golden Bears were in action on day three of the NCAA Track & Field Championships Friday, with Scott Esparza taking 21st in the hammer and Chad Jones finishing 24th in the triple jump. The meet wraps up Saturday when Cal senior Chelsea Reilly will be out on the track in the 5000 meters.

The winds picked up at Drake Stadium Friday, and Jones posted a mark of 47-2.50 with a wind of 4.0 meters per second behind him (8.9 mph). However, the junior fouled on his final two attempts and did not advance to the finals round.

Esparza, a redshirt-freshman, recorded two legal marks in his three attempts - 196-6 and 191-8 - but like Jones, saw his season end before getting another opportunity to compete for the title.

Both Jones and Esparza set lifetime bests in qualifying for the national meet at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. Jones went 51-3.50 in the triple jump, while Esparza became the No. 5 performer in school history in the hammer with a throw of 206-3.
